A teacher said of Cathy that she "represents a mighty work ethic, a down-to-earth magnanimous demeanor, and unquestionable integrity."

Cathy has served as captain of the Dragons basketball and softball teams as well as leadership positions within the Musettes. Her community involvement includes the Harlan Baptist Youth Group and Harlan Little League. 

Christy plans to Cumberland College and major in Mathematical Eduation.
 

 
 

Laura Adkisson - 2000 Christy Owens Scholarship Award Winner

An individual wrote "Laura is one of the finest young people I have ever known. She is courageous, principled, dependable, and very intelligent."

Laura has volunteered much of her time in church mission trips, food drives, and fundraising.  Her activities have included president of the Musettes and Bible Club, and vice-president of the Beta Club.  She was a Governor's Scholar and voted both "best all-around" and "most likely to succeed" by her classmates.

The scholarship committee was impressed by Laura's character and maturity.  In her essay, she wrote, "...I have not survived the tragedies I have faced but I have conquered them...I see college as another four years of adventures waiting to be conquered."

Laura plans to attend Oklahoma Bible College and major in Cross-Cultural Ministry.

Audrey Stouffle

 


 

A teacher who wrote her letter of recommendation used these words to describe Audrey: intelligent, insightful, creative, discipline, mature, and kind.  Of herself, Audrey writes that she has a "strong passion for the written language".  Indeed, she is an experienced and talented writer.

Audrey was a student council representative, vice-president of the Beta Club, and secretary of her Senior Class.  She participated in tennis, Musettes, the National Honor Society, Journalism, Fine Arts Club, Gifted and Talented, and Key Club.

Audrey plans to attend Berea College and major in English.

Kim excelled both in the classroom and in the community. She was a member of the Beta Club, Key Club, Bible Club, Student Council, Musettes, secretary of her senior class, and vice-president of the National Honor Society.  She gave two summers through volunteer mission work (SWAP-Sharing with Appalachian People) and served as a children's church teacher.

Her letter of recommendation contained this quote: "I have always known Kim to be a young lady of excellent character, solid morals, and strong personal convictions...Kim's perseverance and commitment will assure her a success no matter what avenue she chooses to follow."

Kim plans to attend the University of Kentucky and major in Speech and Language Pathology.
